The Off-Site Source Recovery Program (OSRP) has a National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) sponsored mission to recover excess, unwanted, and abandoned radioactive sealed sources that pose a potential risk to national security, public health, and safety. OSRP contributes to national security by eliminating excess radioactive sources that could be used in a Radiological Dispersion Device (dirty bomb) or for any other malicious purposes. The program is part of NNSA’s Office of Radiological Security. Since inception, OSRP has been able to recover more than 43,700 sources containing over 1.35 million curies of radioactive material from over 1,500 sites from all 50 States, the DC area, Puerto Rico, and over 53 other foreign facilities. Source owners, licensees, brokers, regulators, or any other entities are encouraged register radioactive sealed sources with OSRP for removal consideration. OSRP recovers US-origin transuranic sources and high-activity beta/gamma devices that are not commercially disposable, but may not be able to assist in all situations. You can register sources even if they are still in use or do not qualify for recovery by OSRP. Our staff can assist you in managing your disused sources and planning for future disposal.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Environmental Management (EM) mission is to address the nation’s Cold War environmental legacy resulting from five decades of nuclear weapons production and government-sponsored nuclear energy research. This legacy includes some of the world’s most dangerous radioactive sites with large amounts of radioactive wastes, spent nuclear fuel (SNF), excess plutonium and uranium, thousands of contaminated facilities, and contaminated soil and groundwater. Created in 1989, EM has the responsibility for completing the cleanup of this Cold War legacy and managing the remaining nuclear materials.
As the largest environmental cleanup program in the world, EM has been charged with the responsibility of cleaning up 107 sites across the country whose area is equal to the combined area of Rhode Island and Delaware. EM has made substantial progress in nearly every area of nuclear waste cleanup and has completed cleanup at 91 of these sites.
EM is responsible for managing and directing the cleanup of contaminated nuclear weapons manufacturing and testing sites across the United States. Integral to that responsibility is the need to safely disposition large volumes of nuclear waste, safeguard and prepare for disposition of nuclear materials that could be used in nuclear weapons, deactivate and decommission several thousand radiologically and chemically contaminated facilities no longer needed to support the Department of Energy's mission and remediate extensive surface and groundwater contamination.
EM's first priority is to ensure the safety and health of the public and EM's workforce while continuing to protect the environment. EM carries out the mission using sound business practices, innovative management approaches, and science and technology to reduce risks and costs within the EM regulatory framework.
- EM is constructing and operating facilities to treat radioactive liquid tank waste into a safe, stable form to enable ultimate disposition.
- EM is securing and storing nuclear material in a stable, safe configuration in secure locations to protect national security.
- EM is transporting and disposing of transuranic and low-level wastes in a safe and cost effective manner to reduce risk.
- EM is decontaminating and decommissioning facilities that provide no further value to reduce long-term liabilities and maximize resources for cleanup.
- EM is remediating groundwater and soil contaminated with the radioactive and hazardous constituents.
- EM is fulfilling its commitments to reduce risk and complete cleanup across all sites for the generations to come.
- EM is planning for a DOE long-term management and storage facility for U.S. elemental mercury.
