We are thrilled to feature the United Kingdom as the WM2027 Featured Country! Leading experts from across the UK nuclear sector will attend WM in Phoenix to share with the industry the country’s recent developments in the UK nuclear sector. In the UK, nuclear professionals are making real progress against national missions: delivering extensive waste management and decommissioning programs for legacy sites, maintaining the operation of nuclear generation and delivering new nuclear capacity deployment with large scale reactors, and looking to a future with Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and advanced nuclear deployment.  This is a Golden Age for Nuclear in the UK, and we look forward to sharing it all with you in 2027! FEATURED SITE

Our WM2027 Department of Energy (DOE) Featured Site is the Savannah River Site (SRS). SRS will present its integrated missions toward achieving American energy dominance through tank waste cleanup, nuclear materials processing, advanced manufacturing, AI and applied research and development.

Sessions will also highlight the partnerships among DOE, contractors, regulators, stakeholders, and the surrounding communities – showcasing a new chapter of restoration and revitalization.

Description:

Using realistic environmental and radiological datasets, participants will work through the principal steps of an applied analysis. These include preparing and screening data; using exploratory graphical and statistical methods; evaluating distributional assumptions and anomalous observations; addressing non-detects through methods such as Kaplan-Meier estimation and regression on order statistics; and selecting and interpreting upper confidence limits for mean concentrations. Exercises will connect statistical concepts—including sampling variability, skewness, censoring, coverage probability, and Type I and Type II decision errors—to the outputs and recommendations generated by ProUCL.  .

Learning Objectives:

  1. Calculate and interpret an appropriate 95% UCL for an environmental dataset, considering both coverage and estimation accuracy.   
  2. Select and apply appropriate methods for datasets containing nondetects and evaluate relevant distributional assumptions.   
  3. Calculate and interpret background threshold values and conduct selected site-versus-background comparisons.   
  4. Explain the principal changes to ProUCL 5.2 recommendation logic and identify situations requiring additional statistical judgment.

Audience:

Environmental Engineers, Health Physicists, Geologists, Hydrogeologists, Risk Assessors, Project Managers, and Regulatory Compliance Specialists involved in site characterization, cleanup verification, and waste management. 

Prerequisites:

Basic understanding of environmental sampling or monitoring data is helpful, but no advanced statistical background is required.

Description: The US EPA Superfund Radiation Risk Assessment course is an interactive, internet-based, full-day advanced program that addresses specific technical and regulatory challenges faced by site managers (e.g., Regional Project Managers, On-scene Coordinators) and technical staff (e.g., risk assessors, health physicists) involved in managing sites within the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Superfund remedial program. The focus of this class will be primarily be Superfund’s risk assessments calculators and secondarily its dose calculators which are used by EPA for determining compliance with dose based Applicable or Relevant and Appropriate Requirements (ARARs). 

Learning Objectives:

  1. Step-by-Step Approach: Learn a systematic approach to the Superfund remedial program’s risk and dose assessment process for radioactive contamination. This includes discussions on major steps (data assessment, exposure assessment, toxicity assessment, and risk characterization), recommended EPA guidance documents, and the use of calculators/models for conducting risk and dose assessments.  
  2. Site-Specific Assessments: Explore methods for conducting site-specific risk and dose assessments, including adjusting default input parameters in the Superfund remedial program’s risk and dose assessment calculators. The course also covers conducting uncertainty analyses to identify exposure parameters with the most significant impact.  
  3. Practical Recommendations: Discover practical recommendations for enhancing radiation risk and dose assessments, ensuring they align with chemical risk assessments. The course highlights both obvious and less apparent aspects that can improve the radiation risk and dose assessment process.  

Audience:

This course is designed for site managers, risk assessors, and individuals seeking a practical understanding of Superfund radiation dose and risk assessments.

There are no prerequisites required relative to the learning topic prior to attendance
