Program Advisory Committee (PAC)

The Programming Advisory Committee (PAC) is comprised of over 150 nuclear and related professional volunteers from the industry. The PAC forms the technical underpinning of the conference. The conference’s technical contents are broken down into nine designated Tracks intended to cover all contemporary aspects of nuclear material and waste management, including non-proliferation, safeguards, mixed waste, public participation, and environmental protection and restoration. The PAC members, under the guidance of the PAC Chair and Deputy Chair, promotes, reviews, and integrates contributions (abstracts and papers) submitted to the topical areas proposed by the PAC into a coherent current annual Technical Program. The nine Tracks for the WM Symposia are listed below.

Track 1 Crosscutting and General Policies, Programs & Technologies
Track 2 High-Level Radioactive Wastes, Spent (Used) Nuclear Fuel and Long-Lived Alpha/Transuranic Radioactive Waste
Track 3 Low-Level, Intermediate Level, Mixed Waste, NORM, & TENORM
Track 4 Nuclear Power Plant Waste & On-Site Spent Nuclear Fuel Management
Track 5 Packaging and Transportation
Track 6 Decontamination & Decommissioning
Track 7 Environmental Remediation
Track 8 Public Communication, Participation, Education & Training
Track 9 Security, Safety & Safeguards

These Tracks are reviewed and revised, as required, annually by the PAC, to reflect the continually changing nature of the nuclear industry. Each Track, depending on its scope and activity, has two or more Co-Chairs who are accountable to the PAC Chair. The Track Co-Chairs identify and propose track-related sessions for approval by the PAC Chair and work with the Track-specific PAC volunteers to solicit abstracts and to support the abstract and paper review processes. Selected Topics become the basis of the current WMS Technical Program. The roles and responsibilities of the PAC and its members are defined in our PAC Policies. In addition, at all levels of PAC activity, PAC members are encouraged to continuously seek dedicated additional volunteers classified as PAC Supporters, to serve on the PAC as existing members retire or switch professional focus.

P2 Committee

One of the WMS Board of Directors operating committees is the Program and Performance (P2) Committee. It is comprised of Board Members and a PAC-selected representative. The objective is to further ensure that the annual WM Symposia is in step with nuclear material and waste management developments in the world. Another goal is that each annual conference addresses current issues and provides the Attendees and the Exhibitors the best possible value for their investment of time and money in attending the conference.

The P2 Committee solicits and evaluates feedback from the conference attendees and uses this information to continually improve the quality and attractiveness of the conference.  Its recommendations are submitted to the Board for evaluation and authorization of proposed improvements and actions.
