IAEA CONTRIBUTED SIGNIFICANT EXPERTISE AND DELEGATE PARTICIPATION TO WM2008 CONFERENCES

A group of IAEA staff participated in the WM2008 conference, by taking part in delegate meetings, paper presentations, and networking events.

The IAEA also organized grantees from developing countries to attend the WM2008 conference, including representatives from Brazil, Cuba, Tanzania and South Africa. The grantees hailed from Member States that have had successful source recovery operations in conjunction with the Agency.

WM2008 sessions hosted by the IAEA focused on disused source disposal, environmental remediation, and fuel and research reactors. One session hosted by Agency staff, the Worldwide Management of Disused Spent Sources, focused on security efforts that are driven by donor money from the Nuclear Security Fund (NSF), an extra-budgetary fund that supports the Agency´s nuclear security programme. The project has been in place since 2003, and takes a holistic view of the operational and safety aspects of source recovery.

US Congressman Doc Hastings described DOE Cleanup Progress, Goals and Realities of Nuclear Cleanup Funding for FY 2009 during the WM2008

Influential Congressman Doc Hastings (R-Washington) described DOE cleanup programs, goals and the realities of nuclear cleanup funding for FY 2009 during WM2008 Monday luncheon. Congressman Hastings has represented Washington's 4th District in the U.S. House of Representatives for seven terms, beginning in 1995. He lives in the Tri-Cities, which is home to the Hanford nuclear cleanup site. As the founder and Chairman of the bipartisan House Nuclear Cleanup Caucus, Hastings is widely regarded as an effective leader on nuclear waste cleanup. Each year he works to ensure that cleanup at Hanford is accomplished as safely, quickly and efficiently as possible and to make certain that federal cleanup obligations are met. Hastings serves on the House Rules Committee which helps control the flow of all legislation to the House floor. He also serves as the Ranking Republican Member of the House Ethics Committee. Prior to serving in Congress, Hastings spent eight years in the Washington State Legislature. In front of a packed luncheon audience, Congressman Hastings discussed the challenges facing the Department of Energy's Environmental Management program and the progress that is being made. With the annual budget and appropriations process underway, Hastings also concentrated on the challenges, goals and realities of nuclear cleanup funding for Fiscal Year 2009.

The inaugural meeting of the INTERNATIONAL FORUM ON SUSTAINABLE OPTIONS IN URANIUM PRODUCTION (IFSOUP) was held on Tuesday, February 26, 2008 as a separate forum during WM2008.

Delegates agreed that IFSOUP should continue to foster discussion and development of safe, environmentally protective, sustainable uranium production practices. Among the roster of panelists for this one-day, highly interactive and intensive meeting were.

Horst Monken Fernandes, IAEA-Austria;
Alberto Castillo, CNEA-Argentina;

It will also serve as a vehicle to lead industry, regulatory bodies and NGOs to find consensus on mechanisms to assure the sustainability of uranium production- with a view to preventing new legacy sites, Support of our host, Tetra Tech, alloweds IFSOUP to welcome participants from countries with developed programs as well as those with newer/developing programs who are expected to be key players in the nuclear renaissance.
